NANBIOSIS combines recombinant antigen design, custom antibody production and proteomics to tackle challenging biomedical targets.
Barcelona and A Coruña, October 2026 — Developing antibodies against specialised or emerging biomedical targets can be challenging when the corresponding proteins are difficult to produce, unstable, poorly soluble or lack suitable exposed epitopes. NANBIOSIS now brings together complementary expertise in recombinant protein production, custom antibody development and proteomic analysis to address these challenges through a single coordinated workflow.
The service combines the capabilities of NANBIOSIS Unit 1 (Protein Production Platform), Unit 2 (Custom Antibody Service, CAbS) and Unit 30 (Proteomics).
The workflow begins with the design and production of tailored recombinant proteins or specialised chimeric constructs. Unit 1 can optimise antigenic domains and protein production strategies according to the characteristics of the target, followed by protein purification.
These custom-engineered antigens can then be directly used by Unit 2 for polyclonal or monoclonal antibody development. The service covers the main stages of antibody generation, from immunogen preparation and immunisation through screening, selection and antibody purification.
Where required, Unit 30 provides complementary mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis to confirm the identity and integrity of the proteins or antibodies generated. Proteomic analysis can also support the identification of post-translational modifications, sequence variants and mutations.
An integrated approach for challenging targets
By connecting antigen engineering with downstream antibody development, the service offers researchers and companies an integrated route from target design to validated antibody reagents. This can be particularly valuable when commercially available antigens are unavailable or when conventional antibody-development strategies are unsuitable for a specific target.
The combined workflow can help address challenges such as protein instability, poor solubility and cross-reactivity, while enabling the development of bespoke reagents adapted to specific research and diagnostic applications.
Experience in SARS-CoV-2 antigen and antibody development
The capabilities behind this service have already been applied in collaborative projects. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Unit 1 and Unit 2 worked together on the development of recombinant SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 antigens and anti-S1 antibodies.
Within the POC4CoV project, CAbS contributed to the development of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein and other viral proteins for potential use in diagnostic technologies. The team also generated and purified an in-house rabbit polyclonal antibody against recombinant Spike S1, subsequently used as a positive and quality-control reagent in the development and manufacturing of the Immuno-μSARS2 peptide/protein microarray.
The resulting work was reported in ACS Pharmacology & Translational Science in 2025 in the publication “Immuno-μSARS2 Chip: A Peptide-Based Microarray to Assess COVID-19 Prognosis Based on Immunological Fingerprints.”
From bespoke antigen design to antibody development
By bringing together protein engineering, antibody production and proteomic expertise, NANBIOSIS provides a coordinated solution for researchers and companies seeking custom antibodies against difficult or specialised targets.
From bespoke recombinant antigens to high-affinity antibodies: one integrated pipeline for targets standard methods can’t reach.
