We are pleased to inform about the Symposium organized by the LABRET group (Bioengineering and Tissue Regeneration Laboratory), University of Malaga, on the occasion of the retirement of Professor José Becerra.

The event will be held, only in person, on July 7 in the morning at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Malaga

Prof. José Becerra was the Director of the Andalusian Center for Nanomedicine and Biotechnology (BIONAND) since February 2014, before the merger of Bionand and IBIMA (Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga) as IBIMA-Plataforma BIONAND. In fact, Prof, José Becerra took an important role in the incorporation of BIONAND into the ICTS NANBIOSIS till then integrated by Cento de Investigación Biomédica en Red (CIBER) in the area of Bioengineering, Biomaterial, and Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión Jesús Usón, (CCMIJU) and he was also the first Director of the Unit 28 of NANBIOSIS.

In NANBIOSIS we want to show our gratitude to Prof. Becerra, with  appreciation and admiration for his contribution to strengthening this ICTS.

Biomaterials as signal-releasing platforms

Scientists of the CIBER-BBN and IBEC reserch group Biomaterials for Regenerative Therapies, led by Miguel Angel Mateos-Timoneda and Elisabeth Engel who run NANBIOSIS U5. Rapid Prototyping Unit,  have  published a review of the state-of-the-art in biomaterials for skin healing that proposes a move towards more personalized, in situ therapies.

Skin wound healing repairs and restore tissue through a complex process that involves different cells and signalling molecules that regulate cellular response and the remodelling of the extracellular matrix. Publishing in Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews, the article begins by summarizing recent advances in therapies for healing that combine biomolecule signals such as growth factors and cytokines with cells.

So far, the application of these therapies is hampered by high costs, a lack of standardization, no scalable processes, and storage and regulatory issues – as well as a lack of real evidence that they work,” explains Oscar Castaño, senior researcher in the  group. “To address this, we suggest concentrating on biomaterials that can act as platforms to generate stimuli that can promote the type of cell activity that encourages skin regeneration.” This strategy of tissue regeneration in situ uses the body’s own capacity for regeneration by mobilizing host endogenous stem cells or tissue-specific progenitor cells to the wound site to promote repair and regeneration. “The aim would be to create instructive microenvironments that combine biomaterial supports with the many different signal cues that happen in wound healing,” says Oscar. “They’d regulate the spatio-temporal delivery of the proper signalling based on the biological mechanisms of the various events that occur.”

SINO-SPAIN Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Conference with NANBIOSIS participation

Last 7 June 2018 took place in Zaragoza, the Sino-Spain Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Conference, as a result of years of cooperation with Chinese institutions, organizad by Zaragoza University  and Aragonese Foundation for Research & Development of Aragon Government (ARAID), to promote initiatives and foster bilateral collaboration in biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors between Spain and China.

The themes of the forum were:

  • Molecular engineering for biomedical products
  • Diagnoses &Design for new devices for medical uses
  • Tissue Engineering and regenerative medicine
  • Pharmacology and nanometerials for medical application
  • Advanced therapies for cancer research


Researcher of three units of NANBIOSIS partcipated in the Conference: from U13. Tissue & Scaffold Characterization Unit, Manuel Doblaré and Iñaki Ochoa who gave a talk on  “Organ On Chip: Applications for cancer research”, from  U9. Synthesis of Nanoparticles Unit, Jesús Santamaría, who spoke on “Research on nanomedicine at the Nanostructured films and particles” and from U27. High Performance Computing, Esther Pueyo, who spoke about “Patterns of cardiac aging: Mechanisms and relation to disease” and Laura Ordovas, as moderator.
